Graphite is an allotrope of elemental carbon. Each carbon atom is surrounded by three other carbon atoms (arranged in honeycomb-like hexagons) which are covalently bonded to form a covalent molecule. Because each carbon atom emits an electron, which can move freely, graphite is a conductive material. Graphite is one of the soft minerals. Its uses include making pencil lead and lubricants. Carbon is a non-metallic element located in the second cycle IVA family of the periodic table of elements.
